That’s a question I had to answer myself.

After a long career in law enforcement, I thought retirement was going to be the finish line. What I discovered was that I wasn’t necessarily ready to stop working. I was ready to stop doing the work I had been doing.

I still wanted purpose. I wanted something I could build. I wanted to work with people, be part of my community, and spend my time doing something I genuinely enjoyed.

That search eventually led my wife and me to Wild Birds Unlimited.

Why Wild Birds Unlimited?

Birding and bird photography had already been interests of mine, but opening a Wild Birds Unlimited store showed me that this business is about much more than selling bird seed and feeders.

It’s about helping people connect with nature.

Every day, customers walk through our doors because they saw a new bird in their yard, want to help a hummingbird, are trying to solve a squirrel problem, are buying a gift for someone they love, or simply want to bring a little more nature into their lives.

We get to be part of those experiences.

At the same time, we’re running a real business—building a team, developing relationships with customers, planning events, working within the community and growing something of our own.

For me, that combination has been incredibly rewarding.

Starting Over Doesn't Mean Starting From Scratch

One of the things I’ve learned is that the skills you develop during a career don’t disappear when you retire or decide to make a change.

Leadership. Decision-making. Managing people. Building relationships. Solving problems. Creating a culture. Handling difficult situations. Understanding finances and operations.

Those skills transfer.

You may be entering a completely different industry, but you're bringing decades of experience with you.

That can make business ownership an interesting option for someone who wants a new challenge without feeling like they are starting their professional life all over again.

Why a Franchise?

I considered the difference between building something entirely from scratch and becoming part of an established franchise system.

For me, having a recognized brand, established products, operating systems, training, marketing resources and a network of other owners made the franchise model attractive.

You still own and operate your business.

But you aren’t trying to invent every part of it yourself.

One of the things I’ve especially appreciated about Wild Birds Unlimited is being part of a network of people who genuinely care about birds, nature, their customers and their communities.
